What are Biomes?

Unit Summary

Land biomes are very unique within their own aspects. The students in this unit will analyze and identify the distinctive characteristics of each of the six major land biomes and determine what makes each biome unique. The students will explain what types of living organisms live in each environment and how the plants and animals adapt. In addition, the students will research the different locations of the biomes, and the students will collaborate in groups to brainstorm, research, and share their analysis of the six major land biomes through the use of technology.

Technology Integration

  • The students in this unit will be required to collaborate in groups of six to create a digital story using animoto.com. The students will download images that demonstrate the physical characteristics, climate, plant and animal life, and unique features of their assigned biome. The students will be required to choose music that correlates with the tone of the specific biome.
  • The teacher will introduce the unit on biomes through a podcast. The podcast will discuss the objectives for the unit and ask the students the essential question for the unit.
  • The teacher and students will discuss each biome (climate, physical features, plant and animal life, etc.) through a PowerPoint for each biome.
